What Really Happens in Couples Therapy in Lancaster? (And How It Can Help Your Relationship)

Let’s be honest — if you’ve never tried couples therapy before, it can sound… intense.

Maybe you picture awkward silences. Someone keeping score. Or one person venting while the other sits frozen, waiting to be blamed.

But here’s the truth: couples therapy doesn’t have to be a battleground. In fact, it’s often the opposite — a space to pause the chaos and actually hear each other again.

So, What Actually Happens in Couples Therapy in Lancaster?

Every therapist is different, but when you work with me, here’s what you can expect:

  • A calm, neutral space where both of you are heard

  • Time to explore what’s really going on underneath the arguments

  • A chance to understand each other’s emotional worlds — not just react to behaviour

I’m Jonathan, a person-centred counsellor and offering couples therapy in Lancaster. My role in the room isn’t to take sides, declare a winner, or play referee. It’s to support you both in understanding yourselves and your relationship in a deeper, more meaningful way.

And when I say “relationship,” I really mean it. In couples therapy, it’s like I’m working with three people: you, your partner, and the relationship itself.

Why Do Couples Seek Therapy?

Couples come to me for all kinds of reasons — not just crisis. Some want help rebuilding after a betrayal or communication breakdown. Others are simply feeling more like roommates than partners and want to reconnect.

Some common issues I work with include:

  • Constant arguments or communication breakdowns

  • Emotional distance or feeling unheard

  • Life transitions (new baby, job stress, empty nest)

  • Infidelity or breaches of trust

  • Differences in intimacy, parenting, or values

Often, couples are trying to bridge what I call the “emotional void” — being the void between two people and how they both need to work together to meet halfway. Therapy helps you name that gap, understand where it came from, and figure out how to meet each other in the middle again.

“We Tried Therapy Before — It Didn’t Work.”

I hear this a lot. And I get it.

Some past therapy might’ve focused on quick fixes or surface-level advice. But real change often requires more depth. I don’t rush the process. I work relationally, which means I focus on the patterns, beliefs, and emotions underneath the conflict — not just the symptoms.

I’m not here to make you agree on everything. I’m here to help you:

  • Communicate more clearly

  • Listen with more empathy

  • Feel safer in the relationship

  • Decide (together) what kind of future you want

What If My Partner Doesn’t Want to Come?

That’s OK. Sometimes, one person starts individual therapy first to explore the relationship on their own. That can still bring huge clarity.

If your partner’s unsure, they might feel anxious about being blamed or misunderstood. That’s valid. What I can promise is a space where no one is shamed — and where both voices matter equally.

Ready to Reconnect?

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to get support.

If you’re feeling stuck, unheard, or simply out of sync with your partner, couples therapy can be a powerful reset.

I offer relationship therapy in Lancaster and across the UK through virtual sessions. If you want real, grounded support from someone who gets that relationships are messy — but worth working on — I’d love to hear from you.

Let’s find your way back to each other.
